Program Description

This broad-field program is designed to prepare teachers of young children and leads to certification for pre-kindergarten to grade five in Georgia. The cross-disciplinary nature of the program’s course requirements, with special emphasis on content studies in mathematics and reading, corresponds to the broad and integrated nature of teaching in the elementary grades and the fundamental importance of developing the reading and mathematical skills of young learners. The program provides candidates with an understanding of research-informed practices that are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive to become a transformative practitioner in elementary education.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge and understanding of state and national standards to instructional practices.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use research and theories to inform content area instruction in elementary education.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of dyslexia, and other related disorders, and competence in the use of evidence-based interventions in elementary education.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the content knowledge requisite for supporting students’ learning in the content areas, including Literacy, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Health and Physical Education, and the Arts.
  5. Plan for differentiated learning experiences that attend to varying stages of language development, abilities, achievement, interests, and personal/cultural/community assets.
  6. Systematically gather, analyze, and utilize relevant data to measure student progress, inform instructional content and delivery methods, and provide timely and constructive feedback.
  7. Use primary and secondary source materials to deliver the lessons to elementary students, thereby providing information beyond the classroom text/s.
  8. Demonstrate entry-level preparedness of teaching in the elementary classroom as measured by the Georgia Candidate Assessment on Performance Standards (CAPS).
  9. Demonstrate the appropriate professional behaviors and dispositions necessary for working effectively and collaboratively with all stakeholders, including students, parents, administrators, colleagues, and community members.
  10. Integrate technology to support instruction, assessment, and student learning.

Admissions, Enrollment, and Graduation Criteria

Admissions Criteria

Admission to teacher education is separate from Admissions  to Kennesaw State University. Students must meet the admission, retention and graduation requirements outlined in the Teacher Education Admission, Enrollment, and Graduation Requirements  catalog page to pursue this degree program.

Enrollment Criteria

This program does not have specific enrollment requirements. 

Graduation Criteria

Each student is expected to meet the requirements outlined in Academic Policy 5.0 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & GRADUATION .
