HIST 3392 - History of Southern, Eastern and Central Africa3 Class Hours 0 Laboratory Hours 3 Credit Hours Prerequisite: HIST 1110. A history of Southern, Eastern, and Central Africa from the earliest times to the present. The course emphasizes continuities and changes in African culture, African participation in Indian Ocean and Middle Eastern trade networks, and the impact of European colonization. It examines important themes like Bantu migration and state formation in Central Africa; the emergence of the Ethiopian kingdom; the impact of the Zulu Mfecane; Swahili culture and Omani rule in East Africa; Dutch settlement and the development of apartheid; and the achievement of Black majority rule in South Africa.
