Program Description
The “Writing and AI Technologies” certificate program prepares students for AI-infused workplaces through an academically rigorous curriculum. This program offers in-depth training in the application of AI tools in writing practices, focusing on ethical considerations. The course of study entails a genre-based approach to AI applications, resulting in applied projects in the student’s chosen area of focus. Students will develop a sophisticated understanding of AI’s role in content creation and composing strategies, ensuring they are well-equipped to integrate these technologies effectively and responsibly in professional settings.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Employ rhetorical prompt engineering strategies to elicit ethical outputs from AI assistants.
- Articulate uses of AI for diverse audiences.
- Evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of AI outputs in content creation contexts.

Admissions, Enrollment, and Graduation Criteria
Admissions Criteria
The following are program-specific requirements beyond the general Graduate Admissions requirements. To be considered for admission to this program, the following application materials must be submitted to the KSU Graduate Admissions Office:
- A statement of purpose that explains: the genre of concentration; what the student wishes to achieve from the program; any experience the student already has in writing (i.e., workshops or literature classes, reading and writing habits, membership in writers’ organizations, awards, publications, and the like).
- One copy of representative writing sample in the genre to be studied, not to exceed 25 double-spaced pages.
- Optional: One to three letters of reference from someone who can evaluate the student’s writing skills, commitment to writing, and academic work.
Enrollment Criteria
This program does not have specific enrollment criteria; however, students are expected to meet the requirements of Academic Policy 4.0 ACADEMIC STANDING, DISMISSAL, & REINSTATEMENT .
Graduation Criteria
Each student is expected to meet the requirements outlined in Academic Policy 5.0 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & GRADUATION .
