Program Description
The Urban Education Endorsement Program is fully online and consists of three courses that provide candidates with deep understandings of urban schools, families, and communities, with a emphasis on the historical, political, economic and social factors that shape urban education. Candidates learn to create connections between theory and practice, moving beyond stories of school failure to identifying and leveraging (or cultivating) educational resources (or assets) within urban schools and communities to empower learners.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of urban education as situated in historical, social, political, and economic contexts.
- Describe the impacts of urban education on students and families in urban classrooms and schools and apply this knowledge to practices in school and classroom environments.
- Explain and critically analyze the impact of systems, structures, policy, and law on urban education schools and classrooms and apply this understanding to their instructional practices.
- Critically analyze their experiences, beliefs, and cultural perspectives to determine the impact on their teaching practice and work in urban education contexts, including working with families.
- Develop goals and actionable plans for advocacy efforts within urban education contexts that draw upon their knowledge of urban education, culturally responsive and sustaining practices, current research trends, and varying funds of knowledge within their contexts and communities.
This program is a part of the Leland and Clarice C. Bagwell College of Education .

The program is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).

Admissions, Enrollment, and Graduation Criteria
Admissions Criteria
The following are program-specific criteria beyond the general Graduate Admissions requirements. To be considered for admission to this program, the following application materials must be submitted to the KSU Graduate Admissions Office:
- Must possess a renewable Georgia teaching certificate. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia level 4 teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain certification.
Enrollment Criteria
This program does not have specific enrollment requirements.
Graduation Criteria
Each student is expected to meet the requirements outlined in Academic Policy 5.0 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & GRADUATION .
