Program Description

The program in Intelligent Robotic Systems teaches students advanced topics such as control of autonomous robotic arms, simulation, the Robot Operating System (ROS), machine learning, and computer vision.  The program also places an emphasis on systems, as one of its aims is to retrain STEM students not having a previous robotics background by focusing more on integration of robotic systems than narrowly focused depth of knowledge.  All courses in the program are either built or selected around the classic robotics paradigm of sense-think-act, which is more recently updated to include “communicate.”   The thirty-credit curriculum therefore includes nine required courses on the topics of perception, intelligence, control, and communication; and the choice of one of three elective course options.  Courses are organized in seven-week modules consisting of two courses per module.  The program can therefore be completed in twelve months with modules delivered 2-2-1 in fall-spring-summer.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  1. Apply mathematics to advanced robotics-engineering-related problems.
  2. Design and perform simulations as well as analyze and interpret the results.
  3. Exhibit an ability to identify, formulate and solve advanced robotics engineering problems.
  4. Communicate in oral, written, and multi-media formats.

Admissions, Enrollment, and Graduation Criteria

Admissions Criteria

The following are program-specific criteria beyond the general Graduate Admissions  requirements. To be considered for admission to this program, the following application materials must be submitted to the KSU Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be admitted into the MS degree program with a major in Intelligent Robotic Systems (IRS) in KSU:

  1. An earned Bachelor of Science degree from a regionally accredited college or university in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Non-STEM majors will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  2. An undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or greater (on the 4.00 scale). If the undergraduate GPA is less than 3.00 and greater than 2.75, applicants may be considered if they meet ANY of the following:
    • A minimum of 4 years’ relevant work experience in the field of engineering post-Bachelor’s degree. The applicant must supply at least two (2) recommendations from former or current employers/supervisors. The letters of recommendation must clearly state the applicants years of employment and relevant work experience.
    • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
    • Official GRE scores meeting the current admission profile: a Verbal score of 150 (450 on old scale) and a Quantitative score of 148.
  3. A minimum TOEFL score is required for international students.
    • TOEFL: Computer Based composite score > 213 and Internet Based composite score > 80

International students should plan to have all documents in at least one month before the published deadline for their selected program. International students should consult the Graduate Admissions website for additional requirements.
