Program Description
The Joel A. Katz Music and Entertainment Business Program is a joint venture between the Coles College of Business and the Geer College of the Arts. The purpose of the Music and Entertainment Business program is to develop leaders for the entertainment industry. The MEBU program creates an intellectual synergy beyond what students can achieve in business or entertainment programs separately. Core content of the program includes: Business Fundamentals; Entertainment Industry Knowledge; Music Fundamentals; Production and Technology; Music, Film, and Digital Entertainment and Hands-on Experiences. The MEBU program provides students the opportunity to be successful in the music and entertainment industry.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the following concepts in the music and entertainment business: unions and trade groups, major and independent company operations, film studios, television and film productions, artist and talent management, marketing and promotion, revenue streams and the impact of technology.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the use of recording, film, and digital entertainment technology.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the following concepts in the music and entertainment business: transformations and new models, non-profit organization operations, ethics and ideologies, licensing and merchandising, networking, securing a position, building entertainment brands and the future of the music and entertainment industry.
- Demonstrate proper interview skills and assemble a career portfolio that includes a professional resume and LinkedIn Profile.
- Apply teamwork skills to prepare marketing/public relations campaigns for music and entertainment business clients with their peers and present their findings at the end of the course.
- Demonstrate knowledge of licensing and merchandising in the music and entertainment business.
- Prepare public relations campaigns for music and entertainment business clients.
- Demonstrate an understanding of sponsorships, contracts, partnerships, and convergence in the music and entertainment business.
