Program Description
The American Studies minor at Kennesaw State University dedicates itself to crossing boundaries: disciplinary, social, cultural, and institutional. The program is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, focusing on the study of American cultures as they exist locally, regionally, nationally, and transnationally. With grounding in content knowledge and methodologies from a range of fields, students are actively encouraged to pursue an understanding and critical analysis of the history, literature, arts, politics, language, philosophy, and social practices of the multitude of American communities.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
1. Identify the influence of culture on their experiences to analyze how cultural and social contexts affect their perspectives.
2. Research multiple U.S. social and cultural groups, considering their historical and
contemporary experiences.
3. Evaluate various forms of source material, including scholarly and popular multimedia texts.
4. Assess the place of the U.S. in the broader realm of societies across the globe.
5. Consider and engage with multiple points of view.
6. Synthesize research, experiences, and personal reflections to create a project articulating the student’s understanding of the U.S. and their place in it.

This program does not have specific enrollment criteria; however, students are expected to meet the requirements of Academic Policy 4.0 ACADEMIC STANDING, DISMISSAL, & REINSTATEMENT .
Graduation Criteria
Each student is expected to meet the requirements outlined in Academic Policy 5.0 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & GRADUATION .
