The KSU rules for a minor state: “15-18 hours, at least 12 of which must be nonduplicative outside the major’s primary discipline and beyond the courses required for the student’s major and general education requirements”. This rule does not allow for a general listing of courses required for a minor, because the courses required would depend upon the student’s major. For example, since organic chemistry is required of a biology major, those courses could not count toward a minor in chemistry for a biology major wanting to minor in chemistry. Therefore we require that a student develop the minor courses with a chemistry advisor and with the approval of the student’s major advisor.

An example of courses that might be required for a minor for the student not majoring in a discipline requiring organic chemistry might be: CHEM 3361, 3361L, 3362, 3362L, 2800, 2800L, and 3050. An example of courses that might be required for a minor for the student majoring in a discipline requiring organic chemistry might be: CHEM 2800, 2800L, 3050, 3110, 3105L, 3000, 3501, and 3501L.

Chemistry courses taken to satisfy the minor requirement must be taken at KSU.

Minor Programs

A minor program is a prescribed area of academic study consisting of 15-18 semester hours, at least 12 of which must be non-duplicative outside the major’s primary discipline and beyond the courses required for the student’s major and general education requirements. At least nine of the required hours must be at the upper division level. The prescribed courses for a minor may be taken from one or more academic disciplines. Courses taken in Core Area F (lower division major requirements) may be counted as coursework in the minor. Courses taken to satisfy Core Areas A through E (general education) may not be counted as coursework in the minor. Students must earn a grade of at least “C” in all course work applicable to a formal minor. When a student’s major and minor programs require the same courses, the credit hours for some of those courses may be counted toward both the major and minor. However, at least 12 hours of a minor must be non-duplicative with course requirements in the major. In order to graduate with a formal minor that will be noted on the student’s permanent record, the student must complete the requirements noted above and submit to the Registrar’s Office a completed and approved “Declaration of Formal Minor” form along with the student’s formal petition to graduate. The formal minors available at the time this catalog went to press are listed below. The office responsible for approving the minor declaration form and for advising students about the specific requirements of a minor are also noted.
