EE 6400: Electronic and Optical Properties of Materials 3 Credit Hours Prerequisite: Admission to the Electrical Engineering Master program. The course provides an advanced study of the physics of optoelectronic devices. It starts with a review of the fundamental physics that underlie the electronic and optical properties of materials and optoelectronic devices, including practical and relevant topics from quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, and electromagnetics. The course then describes the application of fundamental physics in the design and operation of optoelectronic devices, including semiconductor lasers, modulators, and photodetectors.
Course Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Articulate and compare the fundamentals underpinning the electronic and optical properties of materials.
- Articulate and compare the fundamental working principles of electronic and optical devices.
- Design and characterize the electronic and optical properties of materials and devices.
