SW 7807: Practice Focused Research Methods

3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: All MSW Foundation-Level courses or Advanced Standing in MSW program.
This course provides an advanced understanding of process and outcome practice research methods. The course focuses on the application of basic research concepts and methods for evaluating programs and practice with an emphasis on conducting single case designs.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 

  1. Identify and define the components of evaluation strategies commonly used in social work practice.
  2. Define and describe the importance of outcome-oriented practice.
  3. Describe the professional relevance of evaluating social work practice.
  4. Define the ethical concerns involved in evaluating social work practice.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in design and implementation of effective case monitoring by applying research methodology to the process of practice evaluation.
  6. Discern the appropriate applications of a variety of quantitative and qualitative measures suitable for evaluating practice interventions.
