CE 6101: Finite Element Analysis

3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: CE 3201 (or equivalent) or approval of instructor.
Introduction to the use of finite element methods in structural analysis; the finite element formulation; 1- and 2-D elements; isoparametric elements; axisymmetric analysis; plate and shell elements; dynamics, buckling, and nonlinear analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Discuss the fundamental concepts of the Finite Element Method.
  2. Apply the basic properties, behavior and usage of different types of finite elements.
  3. Prepare FE models and solve typical Civil Engineering problems using FEM.
  4. Interpret and evaluate the quality of the results of FE simulations.
