WLC 4100: World Cultures and the Environment

3 Credit Hours

This course explores environmental themes through selected literary works and/or cultural artifacts. Students analyze how cultures shape global perspectives on nature and humanity’s relationship with the environment, engage in community-project-based learning, and develop critical thinking skills to explore the intersection of environmental humanities with their future career paths.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Analyze and evaluate environmental themes in world literary texts and/or cultural artifacts.
  2. Identify the historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts that shape representations of the environment in world literature and/or cultural artifacts.
  3. Illustrate the intersection of environmental humanities with students’ future career paths, fostering career readiness and professional development.
  4. Experiment with interdisciplinary approaches to environmental studies, drawing from fields such as cultural studies, literary theory, and intercultural competence.
  5. Integrate knowledge gained from the course to community service projects aimed at addressing environmental concerns within the local community.
