FILM 3245: TV Genres and Styles

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: ENGL 1102 
This course examines the conventions, stylistic features, and star talent of a major television genre or format, such as the sitcom, medical drama, police procedural, music video, soap opera, miniseries, science fiction, or Western.


Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 

  1. Analyze the major conventions, themes, and representational techniques of a television genre.
  2. Examine the influence of a television genre on the cinema; our racial, sexual, and national identities; and American and other cultures.
  3. Assess the cultural, ideological, and aesthetic significance of a television genre.
  4. Apply the course readings to television shows, videos, movies, and miniseries that we will watch in and out of class.
