POLS 1101: American Government

3 Credit Hours

This course examines the institutions and processes of American government and Georgia State government. Global comparisons are made between the governments of the U.S. and other modern nation-states.


Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 

  1. Define the primary concepts and terms relating to American politics and Georgia state government.
  2. Describe the institutional structure of the U.S. government and illustrate how these institutions relate to one another.
  3. Describe the institutional structure of the Georgia state government and illustrate how these institutions relate to one another and compare/contrast to the U.S. federal government structure.
  4. Illustrate the role that citizens can and/or do play in American politics.
  5. Relate core concepts from the course to current political events.
  6. Compare the structures and institutions of American government with those of other countries around the world.
