ASMT - 204 Validity and Reliability

The Validity and Reliability Essentials  micro-credential provides evidence that the learner has demonstrated knowledge of validity and reliability in the realm of educational assessemnt. This Validity and Reliability Essentials micro-credential focuses on the importance of validity and reliability of assessments in higher education, the types of threats to validity, and establishing reliability. The targeted audience for this micro-credential is faculty, program coordinators, department chairs, and associate deans for assessment. 

This micro-credential is in the Academic Assessment Series, which consists of five modules focusing on foundational aspects of academic assessment and continuous improvement. 

The learning outcomes for Validity and Reliability Essentials  are: 

• Articulate why it is important to ensure assessments of student learning are valid and reliable. 

• Describe the three tasks that should be completed to lay the foundation for the validity evidence argument. 

• Identify types of evidence that might be used to demonstrate the validity of course or program assessments. 

• Select the reliability measure most appropriate for a given context and design of an assessment. 

Participants demonstrate their ability to assess and strengthen the reliability and validity of an assessment by submitting one of the following assignments: a table of specifications, calculation of content validity using the Lawshe method, generated validity evidence for an assessment, or an item-level diagnostic on a test. The assignment is assessed for completeness. 

By finishing these items, learners are rewarded a level I badge and are better prepared to strengthen the validity and reliability of course or program assessments.
