Students may choose from one of two models to complete the requirements for the MSACS degree: the Classic Cohort for students with undergraduate majors other than computer science, and the Applied Research Cohort for students with undergraduate degrees in computer science. The Classic Cohort admits students only in the fall semester, while the Applied Research Cohort admits students both fall and spring and includes a formal thesis option.

Classic Cohort Model (fall admission only)
Required Cohort Core Foundations (12 Credit Hours)
Additional Cohort Foundation Requirements (3 Credit Hours)
These hours do not count toward degree total of 36
Required Coursework (12 Credit Hours)
Electives (2-3 courses) (6-9 Credit Hours)
Directed Elective: at least one of the student’s elective choices must emphasize the Unix/Linux operating systems. Applied Project (3-6 Credit Hours)
Students will complete six hours of applied studies, which may include research, applied research, projects, professional certification, additional elective coursework, and professional conferences. Note:
A formal detailed project proposal and plan must be completed and approved by a faculty sponsor and by the program director prior to beginning work on the Directed Study hours. Program Total (36 Credit Hours)
Applied Research Cohort Model (with Thesis option)

Students will complete nine hours of applied studies, which may include research, applied research, projects, professional certification, additional elective coursework, thesis, and internship. Applied or Theoretical Research Project
