HPE 3625: Foundations of Skills-Based Health Education

3 Credit Hours


Description:
This course immerses future health and physical education teachers in a model school health classroom experience, simulating the structure and content of quality school health curriculum and pedagogy. Aligned with the National Health Education Standards (NHES), the course emphasizes the acquisition of functional health knowledge, strengthening healthy attitudes and beliefs, and the development of essential health skills that promote health and wellness. Through active participation in student-centered activities and exploration of relevant health topics, students will develop health literacy and a deeper understanding of how school-based health education supports the overall well-being and academic success of youth.


Notes: Admission to teacher education, an issued GaPSC Preservice Certificate, and proof of liability insurance are required.   

 


Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Examine the National Health Education Standards (NHES) and Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Health Education.
  2. Describe the skills-based approach to health education.
  3. Distinguish core health concepts related to health literacy, health promotion, and health equity, and describe how these concepts influence individual and community well-being.
  4. Analyze data to determine functional health information aligned with the development of health skills to inform curricular decision-making.
  5. Explain teaching strategies across developmental levels and how they motivate students to be proactive in their own health and wellness.
  6. Identify, evaluate, and utilize current resources for K-12 health education instruction.
  7. Create relevant learning experiences for the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains that align with the National Health Education Standards and Georgia Standards of Excellence.
  8. Apply steps of the skill development model in teaching.
