PSYC 4401: Directed Study: Teaching Experience 1-3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: Approval of the instructor, and approval of the department chair, and minimum GPA of 3.00. Description: This directed study offers students hands-on experience as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate psychology course. Under the guidance of faculty member, students explore a variety of topics related to teaching and student learning. Potential topics include course design, ethical issues, content preparation and presentation, student motivation and engagement, evaluative feedback, and assessment strategies.
Notes: Students may only apply to be a TA for a course they have previously completed with a grade of “B” or higher.
Course Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Identify best practices in teaching, including methods for engaging students and encouraging active learning.
- Develop and apply clear communication strategies for effectively presenting course material to students, leading discussions, and/or responding to student inquiries.
- Assist in the evaluation of student work, provide constructive feedback, and understand how to use assessment tools to measure learning outcomes.
- Learn strategies for maintaining a positive learning environment, promoting and identifying potential academic integrity concerns, and/or resolving conflicts or challenges that may arise.
