PSYC 4401: Directed Study: Teaching Experience

1-3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: Approval of the instructor, and approval of the department chair, and minimum GPA of 3.00.
Description:
This directed study offers students hands-on experience as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate psychology course. Under the guidance of faculty member, students explore a variety of topics related to teaching and student learning. Potential topics include course design, ethical issues, content preparation and presentation, student motivation and engagement, evaluative feedback, and assessment strategies.


Notes: Students may only apply to be a TA for a course they have previously completed with a grade of “B” or higher.


Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Identify best practices in teaching, including methods for engaging students and encouraging active learning.
  2. Develop and apply clear communication strategies for effectively presenting course material to students, leading discussions, and/or responding to student inquiries.
  3. Assist in the evaluation of student work, provide constructive feedback, and understand how to use assessment tools to measure learning outcomes.
  4. Learn strategies for maintaining a positive learning environment, promoting and identifying potential academic integrity concerns, and/or resolving conflicts or challenges that may arise.
