INED 3304: Education of Exceptional Students

3 Credit Hours


Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education program.
Description:
This course prepares candidates to work collaboratively with families and school personnel to have a positive impact on the educational, social and behavioral development of all students, including those with a full range of disabilities, in an inclusive society. The course focuses on knowledge of legislative mandates for serving exceptional students, characteristics of exceptionality, best practice in facilitating teaching and learning, and accountability through assessment of outcomes. This course requires an observational experience in teaching a lesson plan in an assigned school placement. Verification of professional liability insurance is required prior to placement in the field experience.


Notes: Fulfills Georgia HB 671 requirement 

Students in the Elementary Education program are required to earn a “B” or better to be eligible for graduation and certification. This course addresses the GaPSC 505-3-.01 requirement. 

Admission to teacher education, an issued GaPSC Preservice Certificate, and proof of liability insurance are required.  


Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Define the models, theories, and philosophies that form the basis for special education practice.
  2. Describe the rights and responsibilities of students, parents, teachers, and other professionals, and schools related to exceptional learning needs.
  3. Practice collaboration to promote the well-being of individuals with exceptionalities across a wide range of settings and collaborators.
  4. Articulate the issues in definition and identification of individuals with exceptional learning needs, including those from culturally and linguistically various backgrounds.
  5. Explain the educational implications of characteristics of various exceptionalities.
  6. Through collaboration with colleagues create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments to engage individuals with exceptionalities in meaningful learning activities and social interactions.
  7. Analyze an individual’s abilities, interests, learning environments, and cultural and linguistic factors in the selection, development, and adaptation of learning experiences for individual with exceptionalities.
  8. Utilize technologies to support instructional assessment, planning, and delivery for individuals with exceptionalities.
  9. Analyze and assess personal and cultural biases and differences that affect one’s teaching.
  10. Articulate the importance of the teacher serving as a model for individuals with exceptional learning needs.
  11. Commit to developing the highest education and quality-of-life potential of individuals with exceptional learning needs.
