HPE 3350: Adapted Physical Education 3 Credit Hours
Description: This course examines the characteristics and abilities of individuals with disabilities and their effect on the physical performance of the individuals. This includes methods for assessing abilities, modifying activities and equipment, and developing suitable physical education programs for schools and activity centers. Particular attention is given to the implications of current legislation affecting individuals with disabilities. Includes a 15-hour practical experience working with an adapted sports program.
Notes:
- Students in the Health and Physical Education Teacher Certification Concentration are required to earn a “B” or better to be eligible for certification. This course addresses the GaPSC 505-3-.01 certification rule.
- Admission to teacher education, an issued GaPSC Preservice Certificate, and proof of liability insurance are required.
Course Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Describe common impairments and disabilities including etiologies, characteristics, and implications for physical education programming of individuals with disabilities.
- Design, implement, evaluate the appropriateness of the physical education component of a student’s individual education plan (IEP) or individual family service plan.
- Articulate the legal and ethical requirements of their role in the education of students with disabilities and the way those continue to evolve out of legislative, litigative and sociological changes.
- Assess the physical education needs of individuals with disabilities using a variety of assessment instruments for program placement and instructional development utilizing video technology.
- Synthesize assessment data, develop goals and objectives, and plan instructional activities for individuals with disabilities that address the motor and fitness needs of the individuals.
- Apply principles of behavior management to teaching situations which include individuals with disabilities.
- Design, select, and/or implement physical education instructional activities based on expected progression and related to levels of readiness of learners in an inclusive environment.
- Develop an awareness of the cultural differences among disability groups.
- Identify resources and promote opportunities in physical education that will allow full participation of individuals with disabilities in their movement choices.
- Utilize appropriate instructional strategies including demonstrations to help learners with disabilities link concepts and skills.
