ENED 6414: Teaching Secondary English I

3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: EDUC 6240 , ENGL 7731 , and ENGL 7735  
Corequisite: ENED 6650  
This course is an examination and application of curriculum, learning theories, teaching strategies, instructional materials, and assessment procedures for teaching secondary school English/Language Arts in the modern classroom. Special focus includes the implications of literacy practices; the importance of discussion-based classrooms; the constructivist teaching of grammar; and the grounding of course content in candidates’ field experiences.

Note: This course may be cross-leveled with ENED 4414.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Create lessons that demonstrate backwards design concepts through explicit and coherent connections between objectives, standards, instruction, and assessments.
  2. Articulate how research and theory supports one’s own specific instructional decisions.
  3. Demonstrate how specific knowledge of student differences impacts planning, instruction, and assessment.
  4. Create lesson plans and materials designed to support student development of academic language, including use-based grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and discourse supports.
  5. Critically assess student work in order to improve one’s own practice and plan for specific future student learning.
  6. Demonstrate critical reflection about one’s own teaching performance, practice, and feedback on student work.
  7. Demonstrate professional behavior (e.g. punctuality, professional appearance, collegiality, etc.)
