ITAL 4200: The Italian American Experience

3 Credit Hours

The course analyzes Italian American Culture in the context of U.S. culture. Students examine aspects of contemporary Italian American culture in their historical and cultural contexts through a variety of texts and media and draw parallels with other immigrant identities. Students also work across the curriculum, developing their competence in critical analysis of cultural and literary themes from a global perspective.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Identify major themes in Italian American Culture.
  2. Describe historical and cultural elements that shape the Italian American culture today.
  3. Analyze specific aspect of the Italian American experience and discuss their historical and cultural significance.
  4. Appraise the influence and relevance of the issues being analyzed in today’s U.S. society and culture.
