Prerequisite: Completion of 30 credit hours This course is an exploration of China’s culture, history, and society through screening and analyzing prominent Chinese films. Placed in different historical contexts, the selected films address the fundamental question of the continuity between the cultural tradition and socio-economic organization of the past and the elements of change and “modernity” in the present. Course topics include China in tradition; social transformation; identity, gender, and love; intercultural communication; and opportunities in the era of globalization. Readings and discussions are in English.
