HIST 3382:North Africa and Middle East in Modern Times3 Class Hours 0 Laboratory Hours 3 Credit Hours Prerequisite: Must have earned at least 30 credit hours. This course analyzes the history of North Africa and the Middle East since the emergence of Islam. Its major themes include the rise of Berber-Arab/Islamic civilization, the historical ties between North Africa and the Middle East, and the impact of Ottoman rule. Consideration of the 20th century includes European imperialism, the advent of military rule, the establishment of Israel, Arab-Israeli wars and the search for peace, pan-Arabism and the independence movement in Maghrib, petroleum and international politics, the rise of Muslim fundamentalism, and the problems of economic development and modernization are all important themes in the course.
