INCM 8003:Theories of International Conflict: Socio-Cultural Approaches3 Class Hours 0 Laboratory Hours 3 Credit Hours Prerequisite: Admission to International Conflict Management PhD program This course examines conflict theory through the lens of culture. Scholars studying international conflict and peace processes increasingly recognize the importance of examining how people’s contextual value systems influence how they participate in, evaluate and influence the course of local and global conflicts. This course provides an overview of culture’s influence on understanding and addressing international conflict from relevant disciplinary vantage points in the social sciences and humanities. It introduces students to competing epistemologies and ontologies of examining the human side of conflict with an emphasis on cultural awareness, intercultural competence and cultural politics among many others.
