CET 4420 - Earth Dam and Levee Design

3 Class Hours 0 Laboratory Hours 3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: CET 2110 and CET 3410
Earth dam and levee failures are important issues engineers must consider during the design and operation of the structure. Factors such as internal erosion and piping occurrences caused by seepage can lead to failure, resulting in a disaster.Ê Levee analysis becomes an important topic as the infrastructure ages. This course will cover fundamentals of seepage, stress, deformation and overall stability issues in water retaining structures under unsaturated conditions, with fluctuating water tables, and under rapid draw down scenarios. Students will apply the fundamentals to the design of earth dams and levees, and perform risk analyses.
